By Tami Aschwege, Solutions Engineer, Suntell
In my last post, I talked about how real, responsive vendor support changes everything. But another challenge I’ve seen over the years is bringing together two very different types of banking professionals.
In my 21 years in the financial industry, I have seen a major shift in the banking workforce. The experienced “old guard” professionals who have spent their careers mastering the lending process are retiring. In their place, we are seeing a new generation of employees who are highly skilled with technology but may have less knowledge about the fundamentals of lending.
This transition creates both challenges and opportunities for financial institutions. The key is finding the right tools and training to bring these two worlds together.
A Solid Foundation Built for Lending
Suntell’s Square 1 Credit Suite was designed on a foundation of lending best practices. For institutions that still have long-time employees who remember paper loan files and manual workflows, the system feels familiar in its structure. Each stage of the lending process is clearly defined and follows the same logical flow they are used to.
When I first used Suntell as a banker, I was impressed by how closely it mirrored the traditional lending process while removing the inefficiencies. That is what makes it easy for experienced staff to adopt.
Meeting the Expectations of a Tech-Savvy Workforce
At the same time, today’s banking professionals often come into their roles expecting automation, integration, and intuitive software. They may be skilled with technology, but they do not always know the lending process from start to finish.
This is where Suntell’s innovation comes in. Our leadership team has been intentional about adding features that appeal to a more tech-driven workforce, including exploring AI in banking. These enhancements not only improve efficiency but can also guide newer employees through the lending process in real time.
For example, with the Square 1 Credit Suite, a loan officer can easily navigate from credit analysis to loan presentation to document tracking without needing to know every detail of the old paper-based process. The system provides structure, prompts, and automation that help them learn as they go.
Why Bridging the Gap Matters
If an institution only caters to experienced staff, it risks losing efficiency and knowledge when those employees retire. If it only focuses on technology without honoring proven lending processes, it risks losing quality and accuracy.
The Square 1 Credit Suite bridges that gap by combining a strong lending foundation with modern banking technology. It supports those who value structure and compliance while also giving tech-savvy employees the tools they expect in a modern workplace.
A Future-Ready Approach
By embracing both perspectives, financial institutions can preserve the deep lending knowledge of the old guard while preparing the next generation to succeed. I have seen firsthand how this balance creates stronger teams, better workflows, and more consistent results.
In the end, technology is not replacing the fundamentals of lending. It is enhancing them, making it easier for every team member—regardless of their background—to deliver the highest level of service to customers.
Blending tradition and innovation lays the foundation for success. In my next post, I’ll show you how I’ve seen this combination deliver measurable results in institutions of all sizes.
